Recently ranked by The Times as the leading coeducational
boarding school in the UK at which to study the IB Diploma
Programme, St Edward’s has a great deal to offer. Situated in
the world-famous University City of Oxford, the school
straddles town and countryside rather beautifully, offering
ready access to London’s international transport routes but
also close proximity to the River Thames and surrounding
Cotswolds.
The school’s 2011 IB results were outstanding: pupils
achieved an average point score of just over 37 with our
highest achieving students in the top 1% of candidates
worldwide. The St Edward’s ethos of seeking out and retaining
innovative teachers so that it can offer a genuinely challenging
and exciting academic programme is exceptionally well-suited
to the IB. Sixth form students study either the IB Diploma
Programme or A levels but both courses are taught
independently of each other. The challenging iGCSE is offered
in core subjects at the lower end of the school. IB students at
St Edward’s are part of an intellectually engaged and
international body of students who make for lively
companions at this important stage in any young person’s
academic career. To keep the intellectual life of the school
buoyant and fresh, world-famous experts, such as Richard
Dawkins, or leading academics from Oxford University, are
regularly invited to share their passion and knowledge with
our pupils.
The school is well-known for its balanced approach to
learning and life – as The Daily Telegraph puts it, St Edward’s
has ‘a far healthier balance between the academic and the
non-academic than at other leading public schools’. The
grounds boast excellent sporting facilities, including a stateof-the-art
sports complex, a large number of indoor and
outdoor tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools,
rugby and hockey pitches, netball courts, running routes, a
golf course and a beautiful boathouse on the River Thames,
the heart and home of the successful rowing teams.
St Edward’s has always had a strong sporting reputation,
nurturing a number of junior internationals in recent years. A
new initiative, Team St Edward’s, developed by the school in
partnership with Oxford University, offers specialist coaching
and personalised training programmes to boys and girls who
have the potential to mature into elite competitors.
Music, art and drama are also great strengths at St
Edward’s. The school is due to open a new world-class music
school and owns and manages the North Wall Arts Centre, a
nationally-important theatre, gallery and performance space.
The programme at the North Wall focuses on new and
innovative work, therefore giving our pupils unprecedented
access to some of the most original writers and performers at
work in theatre today.
St Edward’s has over 660 pupils, 80% of whom board. Pupils
live in 11 single-sex houses with a number of pupils from each
year group in every house. Entry to the sixth form is competitive;
some 90 pupils apply for the 30 or so places available each year.
Pastoral care at St Edward’s is first class; one initiative is an
active Overseas Student Council designed to address the
specific needs of our international students, making sure they
feel at home and get the most out of their time here.
