Queen Margaret College is an independent Presbyterian<br />

school for girls. Four ‘schools’ in one college it provides<br />

continuity in education from pre-school to Year 13.<br />

Queen Margaret College is located in Thorndon, a gracious<br />

suburb of Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. It is close to<br />

the country’s national museum, the University of Victoria and<br />

Wellington’s finest theatres. Queen Margaret is also near the<br />

‘best of nature’ with the white sands of Oriental Bay within<br />

walking distance along with the Botanical Gardens and the<br />

hiking tracks in the nearby hills.<br />

Founded in 1919, Queen Margaret College continues to be at<br />

the forefront of education innovation in New Zealand. It has<br />

an impressive record of academic achievement and girls also<br />

achieve outstanding results in an extensive range of sporting<br />

and cultural activities.<br />

The college is a candidate school for the <strong>IB</strong> Middle Years<br />

Programme (MYP) and is authorized to offer the <strong>IB</strong> Primary<br />

Years Programme (PYP) and the <strong>IB</strong> Diploma Programme.<br />

Senior students choose from a dual qualifications pathway<br />

leading to the <strong>IB</strong> diploma or the National Certificate of<br />

Educational Achievement (New Zealand) with opportunities<br />

for both pathways to enter the New Zealand scholarship<br />

examinations.<br />

Diploma subjects offered: group 1- English SL/HL; other<br />

languages with the Principal’s approval; group 2- French<br />

SL/HL, Japanese SL, Spanish ab inito SL, English B; group 3history<br />

SL/HL, geography SL/HL, economics SL/HL, business<br />

and management SL/HL, psychology SL/HL, environmental<br />

systems SL; group 4- chemistry SL/HL, physics SL/HL, biology<br />

SL/HL; group 5- mathematics SL/HL, mathematical studies SL;<br />

group 6- film SL/HL, music SL/HL, theatre SL/HL, visual artspainting,<br />

design, photography and materials SL/HL.<br />

Queen Margaret balances academic opportunities with an<br />

extensive visual and performing arts programme, and sport<br />

for all year levels.<br />

Queen Margaret’s special character is nurtured by a<br />

religious education programme, assemblies and services<br />

where respect for spirituality and different beliefs is<br />

encouraged. Emphasis is placed on participation in<br />

community service. Traditional values are further enhanced by<br />

the House system, which fosters involvement, camaraderie<br />

and lively competition.<br />

Queen Margaret has links with the international body of<br />

Margaret Schools and Independent Schools of New Zealand.<br />
