A coeducational day school, situated in a city of history and
heritage near the thriving naval and international port of
Portsmouth, The Portsmouth Grammar School was founded in
1732. It continues to offer an outstanding education to pupils
from as young as 2 1 ⁄ 2until 18 (a number join at the ages of 11 and
16 in particular).
Academically, pupils are inspired in their learning to be
inquiring and independent, combining knowledge,
enthusiasm and principles with the skills and confidence
required for the modern, global world. A wide range of
subjects is taught, from maths and the sciences to the arts,
languages and humanities. Pupils take British GCSEs or
IGCSEs at the age of 16, and then have the choice of the
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or A levels.
After finishing school, pupils move on to top universities and
careers around the UK and the world.
A dynamic programme of co-curricular activities ensures
that pupils develop all aspects of their character. This sees
sport taking place with success through every season, as well
as outstanding drama and vibrant music, which often makes
use of the school’s close ties with the city’s nearby theatres
and cathedral. Tours both national and international regularly
take place in all these disciplines. A wide array of trips and
activities also takes place to ensure that pupils learn practice
as well as theory: internationally, this includes trips,
expeditions and work experience, language exchanges and the
Model United Nations.
As part of the IB Diploma Programme, pupils integrate their
activities with the diploma’s core: this comprises the
creativity, action, service component, critical thinking
through the theory of knowledge course, and independent
research into an extended essay on a topic of their choice.
Boasting a historic city site, close to the university, and with
playing fields nearby at Hilsea, the school’s facilities are first
class. The most recent development was a brand new state-ofthe-art
science centre, completed in 2010. The Portsmouth
Grammar School is a wonderful place to enjoy the challenges
that the IB Diploma Programme offers its students.
