The Bavarian International School was established in 1990 to
offer an English language education to children from the
international community in the north of Munich.
Set in a green and peaceful park-like environment, the
impressive and historic mansion, known as Schloss
Haimhausen, houses upper school classrooms and offices.
Adjacent modern, purpose-built buildings house middle and
lower school classrooms. Science rooms, music rooms,
libraries, computer suites, a sports hall with adjoining track
and field complex, cafeterias and a Performing Arts Centre
enhance the facility, which opens onto a vista of field and
forest.
The lower school, which includes pre-reception to grade 5,
has been authorized to teach the International Baccalaureate
Primary Years Programme since 2002. BIS was accepted as a
candidate MYP school in July 2009, and began implementing
the Middle Years Programme in grades 6-8 in August 2009.
BIS has been authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme
since 1995. The school strongly encourages and supports all
upper school students who possess the necessary aptitude and
motivation to complete the requirements of the IB Diploma
Programme in grades 11-12.
Maximum class sizes in the lower school range from 20 in
pre-reception to 24 in reception to grade 5. Maximum class
size for both the middle school (grades 6-8) and the upper
school (grades 9-12) is also 24 students.
Student support is offered through the collaborative efforts
of a strong team of English as Additional Language, learning
support, and pastoral care specialists.
The school’s current enrolment of approximately 900
students represents over 40 nationalities, with between 50 and
55 students in each graduating class since 2005. Over 95% of
all BIS graduates go on to continue their education at leading
colleges and universities around the world.
The staff of over 90 teachers at BIS represent 19 different
nations. All are university graduates, and on average they have
12 years of teaching experience. Twenty of them hold a
Master’s degree.
The BIS mission is: ‘Inspiring and challenging young minds
as a caring and committed international community to
achieve excellence, assume responsibility and pursue lifelong
learning.’ This mission informs all choices made by the
school, and unites students, parents, teachers and
administrators into a community of learners.
