The Rochester Grammar School is one of the country’s leading
grammar schools with three consecutive ‘outstanding’
inspection reports. The quality of teaching and leadership was
highly praised, as well as the positive and supportive ethos of
the school. Pre-sixth form admission to the school is by 11+
examination and is for girls only. Boys join the school in the
sixth form. Many choose the IB route, but there is also a
comprehensive range of A level subjects in which students
obtained 75% of grades at A/B in 2011.
RGS has been an IB World School since 2007, and results in
2011 were excellent, with an average of 36 points per student. All
of the IB students with Oxbridge offers were successful in
gaining entry. The international commitment is reflected in all
aspects of the sixth form curriculum, with students also able to
study the global citizenship components of the Cambridge Pre-
U examination. There is a wide range of subjects on offer at IB.
The RGS is strongly committed to furthering excellence and
enriching opportunities for all students. The extracurricular
programme is extensive, with particular strengths in music

(the school has a national specialist status for both music and
mathematics) and drama. Music scholarships are available to
students. Sixth formers also have opportunities for visits and
exchanges – recent examples have included France, Belgium,
Germany, China, India, and California.
Students are strongly encouraged to fulfil the core
requirements of the IB Diploma Programme – we expect
students to strive to be creative and knowledgeable inquirers, to
be principled, to be risk-takers in their learning. The personal
development of students is highly valued, and opportunities for
responsibility, for example as sixth form officers, are extensive.
All students are encouraged to be active members of their house,
and to make a full and lively contribution to the wider life of the
school and to the wider community. Students are enthusiastic
and hard working in their support for charities.
Facilities are excellent, with an independent sixth form
learning centre for study and research, supported by a trained
librarian to assist in sixth form research projects. For relaxation,
students have a brand new Café 6 in which to socialise.
