Fifty years of education, a time to reflect on the past, enjoy
the present and plan for a better future.
The English School (TES) opened its doors on the 4th of
September 1961. Fifty years later the school has over 1700
students. TES has been authorized to offer the Diploma
Programme since 1981, the Primary Years Programme since
2008 and the Middle Years Programme since 2009.
The English School is proud to enter every student into the
Diploma Programme. In 2013 our graduating class will be the
31st class to receive the IB diploma. At present, we have 25
diploma assistant examiners and two chief examiners. There
are also nine PYP, MYP and DP IB leaders.
During the 50th celebration in September 2011, TES received
the highest award from the Colombian Education Ministry
‘Condecoracion Simon Bolivar’ for its outstanding contribution
to education and society. An international certificate from the
European Framework of Quality Management (EFQM) was also
received for commitment to excellence.
Mrs Elizabeth Masson founded the school with the intention
of creating a British style, bilingual environment. TES today
prides itself on maintaining many of the traditions that were
introduced by Mrs Masson, including a house system, prefects
and head boy and head girl.
At TES, we provide an integral education; we have a learning
environment that fosters academic rigor and critical thinking.
We nurture an educational philosophy that is attentive to meet
the challenges of educating new generations in a changing
world. Our students have many opportunities to develop
leadership qualities and make a positive impact in the world. TES
has an extremely strong international Model United Nations,
which is student led. We also have a very active Student Council,
including a very lucrative business (Stockers), where profits go to
help other students and families in need.
Before she died Mrs Masson wrote: ‘One of the causes of the
problems of the modern world lies in the fact that too much
emphasis has been placed on the development of the mind
with the development of personality being neglected. True
education must be integral: mind, body, character and
personality’. TES this year has reviewed its philosophy
statements to make sure that the essence and spirit of the
school is still in line with her wishes, whilst ensuring we
prepare our students for the evolving world we live in. The
English School has 180 teachers who are committed to
developing the whole child and encompass the true meaning
of the 50th years slogan ‘one student at a time’, which
summarizes the need for an individualized approach.
