GIMNASIO VERMONT, as an educational institution, was
originally founded as Colegio Nuestra Señora de la Paz by María
Rojas Sánchez and Magdalena González Fernández, in 1945. The
first batch of students graduated in 1956. From the very
beginning the school has been renowned for the faith it has in
the benefits of education and its ability to transform reality.
In 1994, the school changed its name to GIMNASIO
VERMONT (GV) and established a partnership agreement with
Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, USA, to teach English as a
second language. This partnership agreement has
consolidated the bilingual program and marked the profile of
GV students as citizens of Colombia and of the world.
In 1997, its female based educational system became known
as an innovative model for coeducation with a gender
perspective, which consists in designing gender-based
pedagogic strategies. Boys and girls study in separate
classrooms, but share the rest of the common areas for
cultural, sports and social events. This strategy enables them
to reach levels of excellence in different fields in a happy
environment where they build their own life goals.
Over the past few years our graduates have stood out, by
attaining excellent grades in the state tests (SABER) and for the
number of students that have been accepted by the best
universities in Colombia and abroad, many with scholarships. In
2004, our first bilingual class of graduates achieved fifth place in
the state exams in Bogota. Four years later, our class of 2008 took
first place in the same examinations at the national level. One
year after that, in 2009, our first mixed class of graduates
obtained third place in the state exams at the national level and
second place in the state exams in Bogotá.
In 2009, Gimnasio Vermont started the Mandarin as a Third
Language Program. This program has broadened the
students’ possibilities, not only to learn another language
but, even more important, to learn about another culture. And
the latest challenge the school is devoted to was acquired in
June 2010, when we became an IB World School authorized to
offer the Diploma Programme. Therefore, we will have our first
graduating diploma students in June 2012.
