Jerudong International School (JIS) founded in 1997 is in the
small, beautiful country of Brunei Darussalam, on the island
of Borneo. It is a large, thriving school with over 1500 students
offering a broad, liberal education in the best traditions of
western independent schools. It is one of the leading British
international schools in South East Asia preparing students
for I/GCSEs, A levels and IBDP. JIS has almost 200 highly
qualified teachers primarily from the UK but also from
Australia, New Zealand, France and Brunei.
The facilities at JIS are exceptional. The purpose-built, ICT
networked school occupies over 300 acres on a single campus
in Jerudong, near the coast – a short drive from the capital city.
Students are able to use the art centre (containing a 725 seat
auditorium, dance studios, smaller theatres and rehearsal
rooms), science laboratories, sports facilities, libraries and
traditional classrooms. Boarding facilities are purpose
designed and built for the community of 328 students.
IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) at JIS
JIS is an IB World School. The sixth form (340 students) is
rapidly growing. The IBDP has been added to the well
established A level provision to increase the choice available.
JIS graduates primarily go on to universities in the UK, USA
and Australia. A specialist team of higher education advisors
guide and prepare students for eg SATS, IELTS and UCAS.
The IBDP is staffed by highly experienced teachers,
including IB subject examiners. Class sizes are small with a
wide range of subjects (up to 20) on offer across the six IBDP
group areas. The IB core subject – theory of knowledge (ToK) is
taught in lectures, small group discussion and supplemented
by lunchtime lectures from outside speakers, staff or students.
The creativity, action, service (CAS) component builds on the
extensive ‘Make A Difference’ (MAD) programme offered in
the sixth form. Students are currently involved in many local
projects as well as in Sabah (Malaysia), Cambodia, Bali and
Africa. The IBDP at JIS is a student centred programme
designed to enable students to be actively engaged in
academic subjects but also thoroughly grounded in world
events so they can really make a difference.
