After the liberation of Kuwait from the Iraqi invasion in 1990,
the American International School of Kuwait was established
with only 300 students and has grown into a large,
internationally recognized IB World School with
approximately 1720 students from the Middle East and around
the world. AIS is a private independent day school serving
students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It has an
excellent academic reputation and provides a demanding and
challenging environment for students, many of whom attend
top universities in North America and the United Kingdom.
English is the primary language of instruction although
approximately one-half of the students are Kuwaiti. Another
25% are Arabic first language speakers from elsewhere in the
Middle East, and the remainder are students from more than 40
countries around the world. The ethnic diversity of the Middle
East, layered with the complexity of an otherwise international
student body, provides a stimulating and endlessly fascinating
environment in which we attempt to live the IB learner profile.
In sports, soccer is without doubt the favorite, but AIS
students take part in a wide range of athletic and cultural
activities through the Kuwait Schools Activities Association
(KSAA) and the International Schools Activities Conference
(ISAC) of which AIS is a full member. In addition, there is an
active Model United Nations (MUN) club that travels annually
to the assembly in The Hague.
Facilities
As part of an improvement plan put forth in 2003, there has
been a massive refurbishment of the school’s facilities. This
includes the addition of new classrooms, music rooms,
theatre spaces, a 1200 seat auditorium, strength training and
aerobics rooms, a new indoor and outdoor gymnasium, as
well as a soccer field on the roof. In 2009, a new elementary
school wing was added, which included new classrooms and a
multipurpose room. In addition, new playground facilities
were added for the elementary division. The school uses space
effectively in tight quarters. The brick walled campus contains
more than 100 teaching spaces in three buildings that
surround two interior courts.
Curriculum
In 2008, AIS became a fully authorized IB World School and
offers the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma
Programmes.
