Whitgift School is an independent school for boys set in the
magnificent estate of Haling Park in South Croydon, Surrey.
The school was founded by Archbishop John Whitgift in 1596
and moved to its present site in 1931. Whitgift is academically
strong, and is regularly highly placed in national league tables
for examination results. The average IB Diploma Programme
score in 2011 was above 38 points and nearly half of students
score 40 points or better. The recent ISI Inspection Report
acknowledged its standing as ‘one of the leading schools in the
country’, offering ‘outstanding educational opportunities’.
Whitgift is also fortunate to possess some of the finest
school facilities anywhere. Its dedicated teaching rooms,
laboratories, art studios and workshops are arranged around
two attractive quadrangles and are superbly resourced, with
two libraries, six computer suites and a purpose-built music
school with concert hall. A water garden, home to several rare
species and providing unique study opportunities, was
opened in 2005. An impressive range of playing fields, all on
site, supports an enormous variety of sporting activity. The
school regularly wins national sporting competitions. In 2005,
the school’s patron, HRH The Duke of York, KG, opened a
superb new Sports and Conference Centre, providing
unrivalled opportunities for pupils.
Whitgift is a forward-thinking, innovative institution,
introducing many curricular and co-curricular initiatives such
as its programme for pupils in French, German and Spanish,
and its Strings and Brass schemes to introduce younger pupils
to new instruments. The school has strong multi-cultural and
international perspectives, with unequalled language
provision in the curriculum, an impressive array of trips and
exchanges abroad, and a growing number of overseas partner
schools.
The adoption of the IB Diploma Programme in the sixth
form as an alternative to A levels was thus a natural decision
resulting from the already established ethos of the school
under Headmaster, Dr Christopher Barnett. A rich programme
of study is offered, in classes with an excellent teacher/student
ratio. The theory of knowledge is placed at the heart of
learning. A full and varied programme for CAS is followed.
Admission to Whitgift is by competitive examination; the
major points of entry are at 10+ (Year 6) and 11+ (Year 7)
although some pupils are still accepted for 12+ and 13+ entry.
Sixth form places are offered on the basis of previous or
predicted academic achievement; an entrance paper is sat in a
subject of the applicant’s choice. Scholarships are awarded for
the academically very able, and also for a range of co-curricular
abilities such as sport, music, drama, art and design
technology. The Whitgift Foundation operates a generous
bursary scheme for those requiring financial assistance.
Whitgift School is part of The Whitgift Foundation, a
registered charity (No. 312612) to advance the education of
pupils of the school.
