Heads of IB World Schools
Heads of IB World Schools play an important role in
the IB. Heads serve on IB committees and advise the IB
on its programmes, services and contribute to an
ongoing discussion about the philosophy, objectives
and methodologies of international education.
All heads of IB World Schools automatically belong to
the IB Heads Standing Association (HSA), which meets
every two years in different locations around the world.
The HSA’s role is to:
• advise and cooperate with the IB on matters of
concern to IB World Schools, with particular
reference to educational philosophy, curriculum
development and finance, and to offer practical
support whenever possible;
• provide opportunities for discussion of matters of
interest to heads;
• give assistance to the heads of newly authorized
schools; and
IB Governance
• further the cause of international education.
Each IB region has a Regional Council that serves as a
strategic sounding board for the regional director and
provides information and assistance related to IB
issues in various parts of the region. Six heads of IB
World Schools form part of the membership of each of
the three councils.
The Heads Council (HC) is an advisory group to the
Director General to keep him in touch with issues that
affect IB World Schools across the globe. The HC
normally has a total of 12 members, four elected from
each of the three regions: The Americas; Africa,
Europe and the Middle East; and Asia Pacific. The
revised HSA Constitution states that there may be no
more than one head of a school in any single country
represented on the HC. The HC is in transition from its
former structure, and is expected to fall in line with
the composition requirements from January 2012.
