possibility to K. Lomtatidze to establish historical-comparative studying of the Abkhaz
dialects and her works on the Tapant and Ashkhar dialects are unequalled samples
how an unwritten or new-written language of the mountainian Iberian-Caucasian
languages should be studied.
K. Lomtatidze dedicated some special works to the general linguistics' issues.
Arn. Chikobava evaluated them highly. He considered, that through these works K.
Lomtatidze had showed herself as a leading specialist not only in the Caucasian
linguistics but in general linguistics as well. During the well-known discussion on
linguistic issues in 1950 K. Lomtatidze, as it was excepted, demonstrated firmness and
thorough knowledge of principal issues. Arn. Chikobava noted, that K. Lomtatidze's
review on Prof. G. Serdiuchenko's works (on Abaza) brought out into the open "the
pseudo-scientific activity of a selfless follower of" new Marxist doctrine: ravaging, that
had All-Union importance".
In 1934-1937 Ketevan Lomtatidze was Simon Janashia's post-graduate student
at the chair of the Caucasian Languages at the Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State
University. Simon Janashia's private archieve keeps the documents of 1935, which tells
a short, but exhaustive plan-project of joint working of a supervisor and his postgraduate
student: "We hope, that the work will be come to an end successfully and our
university will contribute to studying language and culture of our brothers
Abkhazians". This spirit motivated K. Lomtatidze as well who was not only a
successful pupil of an outstanding teacher but like-minded as well. During all her
conscious life she was a selfless servant to Abkhaz and always guarded the culture,
national identy of the Abkhazians.
In 1945, when K. Lomtatidze was defending doctoral dissertation, Simon
Janashia has sent her a congratulation card: "I can not conceal – I'm very happy that
You are the first among those women, who will have this high honorary rank in
scientific sphere. I congratualate horny this great victory and wish to ascend that
honourable stair meritely on which You are standing so decisively".
