Importance and Basic Principles of Compiling
a Dictionary of Svan Phraseological Expressions
S u m m a r y
The paper deals with the importance and basic principles of compiling a dictionary
of Svan praseological expressions (idioms and phraseological wordcorrespondences),
secondary composits, expressions of old religious contents,
greeting, blessing and coursing formulae and others. This will be added to the
research "Phraseological expressions in Svan". The work will take into account the
works of Georgian and foreign linguists, as well. Analytical lexical entries will be
compared with Georgian as well as unique modern Svan material obtained by the
members of the group during the field work.
All Svan dialectal (among them Cholurian speech and Lakhamulian
subdialectal) data will be entered in the dictionary. Each illustrative example will have
literary as well as word-for-word translation and equivalent correspondence in
Georgian.
As there is no collection of Svan idioms and phraseologisms this will be the first
attempt of compiling a dictionary of this kind.
