S u m m a r y<br />

Academician Ketevan Lomtatidze belongs to those researchers who has made<br />

Georgian science famous. Her works which are distinguished by lots of novelties are entered<br />

in the "Gold reserves" of Kartvelological and Caucasiologic literature.<br />

K. Lomtatidze's contribution to studying the Abkhaz-Abaza languages from descriptive<br />

and historical-comparative standpoint should be emphasized. Her first fundamental<br />

research "Formation of basic tenses in Abkhaz", that was published in 1938 in<br />

"Bulletin of ILHMC" made clear, that Abkhaz language had gained talented and erudite<br />

researcher.<br />

Fundamental monographs – "Tapant dialect of Abkhaz" (1944) and "Ashkhar<br />

dialect and its role among other Abkhaz-Abaza dialects" (1954), gained great and<br />

honored scientific authority to the young scholar. These monographs represent a deep<br />

analysis of a phonological system and morphological peculiarities of two Abaza dialects –<br />

a close-kindred language of Abkhaz. Each issue is discussed in comparing with Abkhaz<br />

and in consideration of initial condition. Many dialectal texts which are added to monographs<br />

are too valuable. Recorded dialectal material of this number and of this<br />

exactness has not been obtained and published before by anyone. The scholar could fix<br />

not only that difference in sub-dialects and sayings of Abaza, but fluctuations which are<br />

attested in the speech of different generations. This material gained a valuable historical<br />

documentary significance.<br />

By the mentioned monographs and other works created at those times,<br />

K. Lomtatidze founded historical-comparative studying of the Abkhaz-Abaza languages.<br />
