Wohnen manifestiert sich nicht nur materiell, es
ist auch Produkt und Produzent sozialer Beziehungen.
Ist Bestandteil gesellschaftlicher Diskurse
und Praktiken, Vorstellungen und Verhandlungen.
So ist Wohnen nicht in sich geschlossen,
sondern eingebettet in historische Prozesse, Materialitäten
und Entwicklungen im physischen
Stadtkontext. A Room of One’s Own spricht die
kleinste Raumeinheit an, mit der man sich identifizieren
kann, und gleichzeitig wird Handlungsraum
geboten für eine kommunikative Interaktion.
Im ersten Schritt wurde der Stadt Karlsruhe
(parallel auch der Partnerstadt Nottingham)
mittels eines selbst erfundenen und erbauten
Suchers ein normalerweise nicht wahrnehmbarer
Ort entnommen und sichtbar gemacht. Ein
entsprechendes Programm – für nur eine Person
– sollte entwickelt werden, um diesen speziellen
ausgewählten Ort zu aktivieren.
A Room For One’s Own ist zugleich intround
extrovertiert, eine Architektur für eine Person,
die die Potenziale des Ortes für seinen Bewohner
nutzbar macht.
Das Semester wurde als digitale Kooperation
mit Unit2 der University of Nottingham,
Prof. Rosamund Diamond, konzipiert und durchgeführt.
Im Austausch mit den dortigen Studierenden
sollte durch die Analyse und Diskussion
offensichtlicher und verborgener Besonderheiten
– urban tropes/interstitial spaces – beider Städte
und deren Überlagerung ein neues Verständnis
für die Lesbarkeit urbaner Räume entstehen. Daraus
lassen sich räumliche Konzepte und programmatische
Ansätze für den Umgang mit spezifischen
Orten der Stadt ableiten, die sich in
selbstbewussten kleinen Architekturen manifestieren.
Housing is not only a physical manifestation, it is
also a product and producer of social relationships.
It is a part of social discourses and practices,
ideas and negotiations. Living is not
self-contained, but rather embedded in historical
processes, materials and developments in the
physical urban context. A Room of One’s Own
addresses the smallest room unit with which one
can identify and at the same time offers scope
for communicative interaction.
In the first step, a normally imperceptible
place was taken from the city of Karlsruhe (parallel
to the twin city of Nottingham) and made
visible by means of a self-invented and built
seeker. A corresponding program – for only one
person – should be developed to activate this
particular chosen location.
A Room For One’s Own is introverted and
extroverted at the same time, an architecture for
one person who makes the potential of the place
usable for its occupant.
The semester was designed and carried out
as a digital cooperation with Unit2 at the University
of Nottingham, Prof. Rosamund Diamond.
In exchange with the students there, a new understanding
of the legibility of urban spaces
should emerge through the analysis and discussion
of obvious and hidden features – urban
tropes/interstitial spaces – of both cities and
their superimposition. From this, spatial concepts
and programmatic approaches for dealing
with specific locations in the city can be derived,
which manifest themselves in self-confident
small architectures.
