Lost in Translation: Design-Based Research
in Architecture
Translation, confusion and interweaving
hold potential by opening up new perspectives.
How can design activity be made applicable to
scientific discourse and, in turn, research methodology
be made tangible for design? The cooperation
between architectural theory and design
theory created an environment in which the potential
of this synthesis was increasingly addressed.
Both were regarded as equally important
elements of architectural research. The
resulting rational and objectified findings – which
take the subject into account – formed the prerequisite
for joint design work. The research seminar
was conceived as both a reading and a design
seminar.
Video-Knowledge: Artistic Media Research
in Early Video Art
At the beginning of the 1970s, demands
were made by video artists for a completely new
way of imparting knowledge that would be appropriate
to the newly dawning media age. Video
played a central role in this, but its possibilities
had yet to be explored, including in the artisticpractical
work with the medium itself. Examples
of such video knowledge – the generation of
knowledge about video in videos – are to be located
in selected holdings of the ZKM's video
collection, described and interpreted, and prepared
for public presentation. The seminar thus conveys
approaches for research on extensive material
corpora and material-guided procedures.
Empirical Evaluation of Architecture Exhibitions.
The Architecture Biennale in Venice
Exhibitions are a complex medium of architectural
communication with a high dynamic.
In exhibitions, different communication tools are
combined to convey architecture-related insights
and experiences to an audience following a curatorial
concept.
In this seminar, we will explore the question
of whether and how this succeeds. To this purpose,
based on previous research from 2014 to
2018, focused visitor surveys and observations
will be designed, carried out at the Venice Architecture
Biennale and subsequently evaluated.
Operative Space: Designing under Laboratory
Conditions
Architecture is determined by parameters.
The design can be seen as the negotiation and
binding of various influencing variables from
economy and legal conditions to climate, programme,
context, materiality, expression and atmosphere
into an architectural form. In the design
process, the parameters are translated into
spatial structures, typologies, construction principles
and formal strategies and are thus deeply
inscribed in the DNA of every building.
More than Substitute? Thinking about new
building envelopes made from renewable raw
materials
In this course, students should gain access
to development tasks by designing and investigating
façade constructions made of renewable
building materials. The building materials used
are new developments and there is a lack of
known application examples. The aim of the seminar
was to work out the potential of these new
building materials for façade design and to present
this in attractive and technically clean solutions.
The content of the seminar includes practical
experiments on the structural properties of
the building materials, the integration of the results
and findings gained in constructive designs
and the construction of a sample façade.
