LALA Art – Virtuell
– Virtual Curated
Excursion to Los Angeles
von Huene. What's Wrong with Art at the ZKM
from curator Philipp Ziegler and his team. The
group could see a couple of works by this US-
American and German artist, such as the Kaleidophonic
Dog (LACMA) or some of his early Assemblages
(Norton Simon Museum). The results
of the excursion will be published in a detailed
report on the website of Professorship Jehle.
From February 22nd to 26th, 2021, the Jehle Professorship
organized a virtually curated excursion
to Los Angeles, during which a group of 20
students and the organizer (lecturer Muñoz Morcillo)
visited numerous online exhibitions. This
group also met art experts via zoom daily, including
the Getty Research Institute (GRI) director,
Prof. Dr. Mary Miller, and the GRI Scholar Program
director, Dr. Alexa Sekyra. Further contacts
were the GRI Scholar Housing Manager Amy
Meyers, the art historians Assistant Professor Dr.
Camila Maroja and Dr. Omar Olivares Sandoval,
the Heritage Scientist Dr. Alex Bridarolli, and the
GRI curator Prof. Dr. Maristella Casciato. The following
museums were visited virtually: Getty Museum,
Getty Villa, LACMA, MOCA, The Broad,
Norton Simon Museum, Gamble House, and The
Huntington Library. The virtual excursion days
always started at 3 pm (CET, i.e., 6 am PST) with
a cup of coffee and a look at one of the city's live
webcams (e.g., with a view of the Santa Monica
Pier). The group was on the road for six hours a
day – with breaks as required. To make the online
excursion format a success, the group had
some immersive experiences. Each participating
student received a set of anaglyph and VR glasses
with the mail so that they could view 3D and
360-degree video material together. Other measures
included the simulation of driving and walking
tours using videos shot in Los Angeles. Public
live webcams from Santa Monica Beach and
other locations (e.g., Long Beach Aquarium, Redondo
Beach) were also provided during meetings
to convey the Angeleno daily rhythm. We
used the following software and platforms:
Zoom, Watch2gether, Google Arts and Culture,
Street View, YouTube, museums websites, students'
presentations, including some improvised
suggestions. Besides, the group received an outstanding
virtual tour of the exhibition Stephan
