LitNet Akademies Jaargang 10 (1), Maart 2013
18 “I was amazed at what emerged; you don’t need to go to [Bible] commentaries; the text
will speak to you for itself.”
19 “Becoming part of the characters in the story gave me a very different understanding. The
method allows you to get into the shoes of the biblical characters and see them and their
struggles in a new way, often a quite different way to previously, so you understand far more
of the details of the text.”
20 “I put myself in Ruth’s shoes and felt her experience myself.”
21 “… a more fully human experience of the text …”
22 “... hear it with your heart and psyche”
23 “... other sides of a biblical story that I would not normally see, and helps one to get into
other people’s shoes”
24 “I could hear a voice in the text I would not normally hear; imagining Ruth’s fight against
poverty, I saw a new perspective.” “This method allowed me to see what it is like to be a
foreigner in a foreign land.”
25 “Reading the text as a man, you expect the heroes to be men; but this reading makes you
see women as the heroes [sic]. I was surprised at how easily I could relate to Ruth.”
26 “… quite threatening and scary because you do not know where it will take you”
27 “led by the Spirit”
28 “I probably would have focused on Boaz as the good guy, but I began to see it differently; I
didn’t like the feeling that I might be owned by someone.”
29 “I felt as though God wanted me to see the other side: what it is like for women.”
30 “I saw patriarchy and got irritated: This is the typical fairy tale of a man saving a woman.”
31 “Then I saw that it wasn’t a case of a man saving a woman, but of Ruth’s kindness being
responded to. The change for me came in verse 11 … I decided that I should not be scared to
declare myself a feminist.”
32 “It taught me that I can allow me to accept me.”
33 “In my community hard-working women are sought out for marriage. I feel a person must
love you for who you are. In this story I see a different kind of person from the one I see in
the community: Boaz didn’t chase Ruth; she took the initiative. Women must learn to take the
initiative more.”
