Minorities and media in BiH - DECLARED READINES REMAINS ON PAPER ONLY
Author: Radenko Udovičić with Nejra Plasto, Jasmina Korda, Zoran Udovičić
Summary
Bosnia-Herzegovina is one of the most monolithic countries in Europe, viewed through the
formal prism of the national majority and minority. One of the reasons is the fact that BiH
borders with Serbia and Croatia, countries whose majority populations have the status of
constituent peoples in BiH. Namely, in Europe the most numerous national minorities are
peoples from neighboring countries.
The Law on the Protection of Rights of National Minorities in BiH identifies 17 national
minorities that reside in BiH: Albanians, Montenegrins, Czechs, Italians, Jews, Hungarians,
Macedonians, Germans, Poles, Roma, Romanians, Russians, Ruthenians, Slovaks, Slovenes,
Turks and Ukrainians. The most numerous national minority by far are the Roma, but
estimates on their number range from 9,000, as registered in the 1991 census of the
population, to 80,000, as claimed by Sarajevo-based Roma Information Center.
The analysis produced in Bosnia-Herzegovina focuses on the small number of national
minority media and programs for national minorities which are aired in continuity on the
public radio services. The whole national report brings a considerable degree of various
recommendations for good practice, i.e. professional reporting on diversity, based on findings
obtained in interviews with media editors and representatives of national minority media, as
well as the media experience of the authorship team.
