They were able to take it. They succeeded in stealing<br />
it away. The town was left without its bell. A bell is<br />
still there [in the Church of St. Lawrence]—the one<br />
that's there now. It's the second bell. The first one<br />
was bigger.<br />
Now, the second bell, there, it has taken the place<br />
of the first bell, now. The bell that's there now is<br />
called Maria Angelica. The other was Maria Teresa.<br />

The [thieves] were able to get it there to Chiapa.<br />
"Now that we've won, let's see, I guess, if they come<br />
looking for it. What can they do to take it? There's<br />
no way. Even if they pay us for a cart—but a cart<br />

went. It disappeared. Who knows who stole it. How<br />
would you know who it was—if it was just the<br />
sacristans themselves or somebody else who stole it.<br />
We don't know.<br />
That bell arrived [in Chiapa]. "We'll see. The<br />
Indians will have to come looking for it. They<br />
always come to sell peaches. Take ca—re, then!<br />
Don't let them see that it's here now!" said the<br />
Chiapanecs—those twelve [Chiapanecs]. The bell<br />
arrived. They hid it. It was hidden a long time. Little<br />
by little they turned their attention to it. It went up.<br />
They got it up into the bell tower. I don't know how<br />
long they hid it. I don't know if it was a year, or<br />
longer. I don't know.<br />
When it was hidden—when the people of Zinacantan<br />
Center saw it— it was already hung. What<br />
good did it do? We hardly could get it down<br />
ourselves! They just looked at it.<br />
The bell was hanging there, now. That's all. It was<br />
rung there, then. They heard its tone, since they<br />
recognized it. Ye—s!<br />
