MECHANICAL INSULATION
A. The work covered by this Specification consists of furnishing all labor, equipment,
materials, accessories, and performance of all operations necessary for the installation of
all insulation on all hot and cold surfaces of plumbing, piping, space heating and air
conditioning systems in strict accordance with the specifications and applicable drawings.
B. Types of mechanical insulation specified in this section include the following:
1. Piping System Insulation:
a. Fiberglass.
b. Cellular Glass.
c. Calcium Silicate.
d. Thermal Ceramic.
2. Equipment Insulation:
a. Fiberglass.
b. Calcium Silicate.
c. 25/50 Rated Flexible Closed Cell Elastomeric.
C. Refer to other Division 22 sections for requirements related to protection saddles,
protection shields, thermal hanger shields, mechanical identification, and duct linings,
which are not part of the work of this section.
1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
A. Manufacturer's Qualifications: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of mechanical
insulation products and systems, of the types and sizes required, whose products have
been in satisfactory use in similar service for not less than 3 years.
B. Installer's Qualifications: Firm with at least 5 years of successful installation experience on
projects with mechanical insulation. All insulation shall be installed per manufacturer’s
recommendations by skilled workmen regularly engaged in this type of work.
C. Furnish insulation systems to the project site bearing the manufacturer’s label with product
identification.
1.03 FIRE HAZARD RATING:
A. All insulation products (including insulation, jacket, and adhesive used to adhere the jacket
to the insulation) shall have composite Fire and Smoke Hazard ratings, as tested under
procedures defined by ASTM E-84, NFPA 255 and UL 723, not exceeding:
