Special meeting of the Board of Aldermen, called by his honor the Mayor to take action on Mayor's communication and order with reference to appropriating ^25,000 to Highways, Special Item Account, re. resurfacing Broadway under Chapter 90, all the members having been duly notified in writing, City Hall, Somerville, April 7, 1948, 7 P. M. The President, Alderman Mallard, presiding. Aldermen Ryan, McCarthy, Reynolds, Stackpole, Hall, Butler, Capuano, Whitney and Vice-president Brady present. Reading of records commenced; further reading dispensed with under a suspension of the rules and records approved by yea and nay vote, Aldermen Ryan, McCarthy, Reynolds, Stackpole, Hall, Butler, Capuano, Whitney, Vicepresident Brady and the President, 10, voting in the affirmative; Alderman Hurd, 1, being absent at this stage of the meeting. JURORS Received a special venire for the drawing of two men to serve as traverse jurors at the Superior Court now in session at Cambridge, the persons so drawn to appear and attend at the first session of said court on Monday, the twelfth day of April, 1948, at 10 A.M. The box containing the names being shaken and the slips or ballots bearing the names being mixed, Aldermen Whitney and Stackpole being designated for that purpose drew from the box and read aloud names as follows: 1. John Sluben 104 Line St. Machinist 2, John No Tedesco 11 Arnold Ave. Pence maker Received a special venire for the drawing of two men to serve as traverse jurors at the Superior Court now In session at Cambridge, the persons so drawn to appear and attend at the second session of said court on Monday, the twelfth day of April, 1948, at 10 A.M. follows: Aldermen Whitney and Stackpole drew names as 1. Daniel Davis 82 Munroe St. Checker 2. Roger W. Lennon 6 Liberty Ave. Shipper The slips or ballots bearing the names were passed by the Aldermen to the President, who verified the names and passed them to the City Clerk, who also verified the names by reading them aloud from said slips or ballots, which were then duly endorsed and returned to the jury box. i i i i Dear Dr. Kurd and Gentlemen; Broadway is a main thoroughfare in the City of Somerville, used daily by thousands of motor vehicles. The way is in a deplorable condition because of the abnormal winter and must be put in a condition safe for use. The Highway Department must expend considerable time and expense repairing this way, and this is not always satisfactory* The City now has an opportunity to resurface the entire length of Broadway, at one fourth_o~f_the_cpVt_t It is good business to take "advantage "of Jthe offer of~ the State to" contribute one-half the c'ost, and the County of Middlesex one-fourth of the cost. However, the City of Somerville is no longer in position to delay action in this Important matter. We must inform the State and County, without farther delay, whether or not the City desires to have Broadway resurfaced this year.
