Alderman Reynolds and. President Mallard offered

Whereas;
That in view of the recent publicised
Increases in-assessed .valuations, wherein, the citizens ~
of my .ward and of-the": other wards of the city, it^ has become
e.vident that an unusual hardship has been saddled
upon the citizens-of .Somervllle, by virtue of this unexpected
condition, .-arid

It is my contention- that a blanket
5/6 increase in valuations might have been acceptable by
the average home owner, and
Whereas:
An increased tax rate as an" item,
might drop in 'future years, but an Increase in the valuation
of the property is a burden that we may carry 'for innumerable
years without redress, and
"Whereas:
His Honor the Mayor has indicated that
he was not and is not favorable to the procedure followed
by the members of the Board of Assessors and the State
Tax Commissioner, and
Whereas::
The average ci-ti zen would have been
satisfied with a straight Increase in the tax rate, which
might be lowered in other years, but they do voice their
objection to the increased valuations which may never be
lowered, I do hereby, in behalf of my constituents objeot
to the procedure followed, and I do submit the following,
whereby, be it
Resolved:
That His Honor the Mayor having voiced
his disapproval to th-e actions of the Board of Assessors^
sHall Instigate,'action immediately, wherein he shall correct_the
present exorbitant and unjustified high .tax
aftuatio'n saddled upon the citizens of Somerville, and
thus alleviate the unbearable burden borne by Mr. Average
Tax Payer.
