HACKNEY CARRIAGE DRIVER TO HAVE LICENSES AND<br />

COPY OF RULES AND REGULATIONS IN HIS POSSESSION.<br />

SECTION 22. Every driver having charge <strong>of</strong> a hackney carriage shall<br />

have with him his hackney carriage driver's license, and a copy <strong>of</strong> these<br />

rules and regulations to be shown to a passenger on request, and shall have<br />

further in an easily accessible place in the vehicle the hackney carriage<br />

license for such vehicle.<br />

DISPLAY OF IDENTIFICATION AND RATE CARDS.<br />

SECTION 23. The driver <strong>of</strong> a hackney carriage shall display upon the<br />

inside <strong>of</strong> the vehicle a rate card and an identification card. The latter card<br />

shall contain a recent photograph <strong>of</strong> such driver, wearing uniform cap, and<br />

the photograph shall be <strong>of</strong> a size, 2^ inches by 2^ inches.<br />

These cards are to be approved by the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police and shall be<br />

enclosed in a frame approved by the Inspector <strong>of</strong> Carriages. Said cards<br />

shall be illuminated after sundown with a suitable light, not less than twocandle<br />

power, so arranged as to throw a continuous, steady light thereon,<br />

so that the cards shal be discernible to, and can be seen by, the passenger<br />

or passengers in the rear seat.<br />

The driver <strong>of</strong> every taxicab shall display on the interior in clear view<br />

<strong>of</strong> the passengers a card approved by the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police notifying the<br />

passengers that drivers are forbidden by law to demand more than the<br />

fare recorded on the taximeter, regardless <strong>of</strong> the number <strong>of</strong> passengers<br />

conveyed.<br />

DRESS OF HACKNEY DRIVERS.<br />

SECTION 24. Every driver having charge <strong>of</strong> a licensed taxicab in a<br />

public place shall be suitably dressed, wearing a uniform cap, and he shall<br />

wear on the left breast <strong>of</strong> his outside coat a badge bearing the number <strong>of</strong><br />

his driver's license. The figures must be <strong>of</strong> a pattern approved each year by<br />

the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police and furnished at the Office <strong>of</strong> the Inspector <strong>of</strong> Carriages.<br />

Such badge shall be kept repaired by driver, and is to remain the property<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Police Department, to be returned to the Office <strong>of</strong> the Inspector <strong>of</strong><br />

Carriages should a licensee have his license revoked or suspended, or should<br />

he cease to be a hackney carriage driver.<br />

LOST BADGES.<br />

SECTION 25. If a badge is lost, the licensee to whom the same was<br />

issued shall immediately report such loss to the Inspector <strong>of</strong> Carriages, who<br />

will furnish a new badge on payment there<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> a fee <strong>of</strong> one dollar.<br />

PASSENGER'S RECEIPT.<br />

SECTION 26. When requested by a passenger, or whenever there is a<br />

dispute over the fare, a driver shall give a receipt to the said passenger.<br />

Said receipt shall be upon a form approved by the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police and<br />

shall contain the full name and badge number <strong>of</strong> the driver, the date and<br />

time <strong>of</strong> the giving <strong>of</strong> the.receipt and the amount received. Every driver<br />

shall have such receipts in his possession at all times.<br />

POLICE MEDALLION SHALL BE DISPLAYED.<br />

SECTION 27. Every licensed hackney carriage shall have affixed upon<br />

the cowl on the right-hand side, a metal medallion <strong>of</strong> a style approved by<br />

the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police, bearing the police number.<br />

The police medallion number shall be painted on the rear <strong>of</strong> the hackney<br />

carriage, plainly visible to the public, in figures approved by the Inspector<br />

<strong>of</strong> Carriages. No plate or number, other than said police medallion number,<br />

Massachusetts registration plate and telephone number, shall be painted<br />

or affixed to the rear <strong>of</strong> any hackney carriage.<br />

PASSENGER'S CONTROL OF VEHICLE.<br />

SECTION 28. No driver having charge <strong>of</strong> any licensed taxicab shall<br />

take up or carry any other passenger after the taxicab has been occupied<br />

or engaged by any prior passenger, until such prior passenger shall have<br />

discharged said taxicab, without the consent <strong>of</strong> such prior passenger. And<br />

such prior passenger shall not be obliged or requested to pay any extra<br />

fare or fee for refusing such consent.<br />

RECORD OF TRIPS AND LOST ARTICLES.<br />

SECTION 29. Every licensed driver must keep a record <strong>of</strong> all trips<br />

made, together with a list <strong>of</strong> all articles found in the hackney carriage, on<br />

a form approved by the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police, which record shall be kept by the<br />

owner <strong>of</strong> the licensed hackney carriage as provided in Section 1ft. 10<br />
