Baird of the Police Department for his alertness" in apprehending and capturing on April 10th last, a Parolee wanted for a Felony thereby displaying valor and courage in the finest traditions of his Department, and be it further Resolved: that we unhesitatingly recommend to His Honor the Mayor and to the Chief of the Police Department that Officer Baird be granted three (3) days off without loss of pay in recognition of his successful action and devotion to duty in the best interests and safety pf our people, and our City Clerk is requested to send copies of -299-

Read twice and adopted* Alderman Capuano offered the following orders and draft of ordinance, Orders Ordered: 75031 That the Commissioner of Streets cause to be erected, signs marked "SLOW - SCHOOL CHILDREN" adjacent to all schools,_at least one hundred and fifty (150) feet in each direction from the schools, and further, the Commissioner of Streets shall cause to be painted, Safety Zones in front of each school to permit the children to cross the street in safety. Said signs shall conform to the standards as prescribed by the De- partment of Public Works of .the Commonwealth of Massachu- setts* Adopted. Ordered: 75032 That the Commissioner of Streets make immediate arrangements to repair the fences on both sides of the Lowell Street Bridge__over the Boston and Maine Railroad, and replace the many missing boards. The missing bpards leave several unprotected areas which con- stitutes a very dangerous situation. Young children traverse this bridge going to and from school and in order to afford the proper protection to these children, the said repairs and replacements must be completed at once. Adopted* Ordered; 75033 The Chief of the Police Department is_ hereby directed to cause the Traffic^ Regulations of the City_of Somerville to be enforced and to pay particular attention to Article IV, Section 12, Sub-section (1), and enforce this on the approval of an amendment which will ad'd, after the word'curb 1 in line six, the words, 'with the permission of the Chief of Police 1 , and the Chief of Police then must issue a permit for commercial vehicles to back to the curb or angle parking by said vehicles where such parking is not specifically permitted by ordinance, and the Chief is further directed to take corrective measures to stop angle parking and the backing o'f 'trucks to the curb in front of the Hub Cash and Carry Company, at 304-A Highland Avenue, _arid thus alleviate "the dangerous condition existing, with the blocking of traffic, and the sidewalk, forcing even women with baby -300-
