WHEREAS:<br />

RESOLUTION . 74976<br />

The past week has brought the members <strong>of</strong> this<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen deep sorrow with the passing <strong>of</strong> our<br />

former colleague and good friend.<br />

DR. EDITH L. KURD,<br />

a former member <strong>of</strong> the Somervllle Hl£h School Faculty,<br />

<strong>Somerville</strong> School Committee, <strong>Somerville</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen,<br />

the <strong>Somerville</strong> Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar and<br />

the Federal Bar, and<br />

WHEREAS:<br />

Dr. Kurd a civic leader gave many years <strong>of</strong> her life<br />

to public service, fortified with an education which saw<br />

her receive an A. B. Degree from Radcliffe College, an LL.D.<br />

Degree from Portia Law School and a Doctorate <strong>of</strong> Jurisprudence<br />

personally from Ex-President William H. Taft, at<br />

Yale University, School <strong>of</strong> Law, and<br />

WHEREAS:<br />

Her passing hag deprived our <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> a public benefactor,<br />

a faithful and efficient public <strong>of</strong>ficial, and a<br />

leader who brought distinction to her pr<strong>of</strong>ession, and whose<br />

career and achievements and true friendship, merited the<br />

sincere respect and esteem <strong>of</strong> all the people <strong>of</strong> <strong>Somerville</strong>,<br />

and<br />

WHEREAS:<br />

It is significant that to everyone who had come in<br />

contact with her, it had been a cherished privilege to<br />

know, to admire and to be counted among her innumerable<br />

friends, for she was tolerant <strong>of</strong> the short-comings <strong>of</strong> others,<br />

and was ever willing to lend a guiding hand and counsel, and<br />

WHEREAS?<br />

Dr. Kurd was a symbol <strong>of</strong> success in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

education, culture and ethics, dominant in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

social service, supreme in the field <strong>of</strong> civic endeavor and<br />

betterment, and imbued with the fundamental doctrine <strong>of</strong><br />

faith and fair-play, she was a lady <strong>of</strong> the highest degree<br />

<strong>of</strong> graciousness, with pure and sweet cogitations that<br />

cannot be equalled, and certainly, shall never be surpassed,<br />

and<br />

WHEREAS:<br />

Though we can but visualize a glowing picture <strong>of</strong><br />

the lovely and gracious lady with whom we worked, it is incontrovertible<br />

that which she was ever cognizant <strong>of</strong>, the<br />

magnitude <strong>of</strong> the varied needs <strong>of</strong> our city, to progress,<br />

she at the same time appraised realistically, our potential<br />

capacity to- meet the needs and acted accordingly, and<br />

WHEREAS:<br />

In her long life <strong>of</strong> public service, public Good Will<br />

manifested itself at all times, for she never spoke ill <strong>of</strong><br />

anyone. She defended people in and out <strong>of</strong> court. She knew<br />

that to have friends, one must be a friend. Such service<br />

cannot be evaluated, therefore be it<br />

RESOLVED:<br />

That this Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen in session assembled do<br />

hereby extend to her brother Lyman C. Kurd, and relatives,<br />

our deepest sympathy In this, their hour <strong>of</strong> bereavementr<br />

and realizing that .words are inadequate to express our sincere<br />

feeling relative to the irrevocable decision rendered<br />

by the Lord, Who Taketh as He Giveth, though in her resting<br />
