WHEREAS:

RESOLUTION . 74976
The past week has brought the members of this
Board of Aldermen deep sorrow with the passing of our
former colleague and good friend.
DR. EDITH L. KURD,
a former member of the Somervllle Hl£h School Faculty,
Somerville School Committee, Somerville Board of Aldermen,
the Somerville Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar and
the Federal Bar, and
WHEREAS:
Dr. Kurd a civic leader gave many years of her life
to public service, fortified with an education which saw
her receive an A. B. Degree from Radcliffe College, an LL.D.
Degree from Portia Law School and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence
personally from Ex-President William H. Taft, at
Yale University, School of Law, and
WHEREAS:
Her passing hag deprived our City of a public benefactor,
a faithful and efficient public official, and a
leader who brought distinction to her profession, and whose
career and achievements and true friendship, merited the
sincere respect and esteem of all the people of Somerville,
and
WHEREAS:
It is significant that to everyone who had come in
contact with her, it had been a cherished privilege to
know, to admire and to be counted among her innumerable
friends, for she was tolerant of the short-comings of others,
and was ever willing to lend a guiding hand and counsel, and
WHEREAS?
Dr. Kurd was a symbol of success in the field of
education, culture and ethics, dominant in the field of
social service, supreme in the field of civic endeavor and
betterment, and imbued with the fundamental doctrine of
faith and fair-play, she was a lady of the highest degree
of graciousness, with pure and sweet cogitations that
cannot be equalled, and certainly, shall never be surpassed,
and
WHEREAS:
Though we can but visualize a glowing picture of
the lovely and gracious lady with whom we worked, it is incontrovertible
that which she was ever cognizant of, the
magnitude of the varied needs of our city, to progress,
she at the same time appraised realistically, our potential
capacity to- meet the needs and acted accordingly, and
WHEREAS:
In her long life of public service, public Good Will
manifested itself at all times, for she never spoke ill of
anyone. She defended people in and out of court. She knew
that to have friends, one must be a friend. Such service
cannot be evaluated, therefore be it
RESOLVED:
That this Board of Aldermen in session assembled do
hereby extend to her brother Lyman C. Kurd, and relatives,
our deepest sympathy In this, their hour of bereavementr
and realizing that .words are inadequate to express our sincere
feeling relative to the irrevocable decision rendered
by the Lord, Who Taketh as He Giveth, though in her resting
