I know you are aware of the excellent structural
condition in all of our school buildings. At the time of
the reconstruction program, many health and fire hazards
were eliminated.
However, the Inspector of the Department of Public
Safety has now pointed out that many additional safety
measures must be taken care of, essential to the safety of
our school children, and as soon as it is physically
possible to do so.
As Mayor, I am anxious, as I know each of you are,
to get this work under way. We can then point with pride
to our schools as comparable to the finest in the Commonwealth.
Toward this end, I appeal to you to give this
matter your utmost consideration, with a view toward speedy
action.
Therefore, I respectfully request that your
Honorable Board approve the appropriation from 1949 Revenue
of the 5_um_b"f''& 180, OOP. 00 to Building Department, Buildings
and Grounds", Special Item, to cover cost of labor and
materials necessary to cover the work involved in taking
care of fire, safety and other work requested by the Massachusetts
Department of Public Safety, in all of the public
school_t«u ildings.

by your Honorable Board January 26, and effective as of
July 26, 1948.
