I know you are aware <strong>of</strong> the excellent structural<br />

condition in all <strong>of</strong> our school buildings. At the time <strong>of</strong><br />

the reconstruction program, many health and fire hazards<br />

were eliminated.<br />

However, the Inspector <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Public<br />

Safety has now pointed out that many additional safety<br />

measures must be taken care <strong>of</strong>, essential to the safety <strong>of</strong><br />

our school children, and as soon as it is physically<br />

possible to do so.<br />

As Mayor, I am anxious, as I know each <strong>of</strong> you are,<br />

to get this work under way. We can then point with pride<br />

to our schools as comparable to the finest in the Commonwealth.<br />

Toward this end, I appeal to you to give this<br />

matter your utmost consideration, with a view toward speedy<br />

action.<br />

Therefore, I respectfully request that your<br />

Honorable Board approve the appropriation from 1949 Revenue<br />

<strong>of</strong> the 5_um_b"f''& 180, OOP. 00 to Building Department, Buildings<br />

and Grounds", Special Item, to cover cost <strong>of</strong> labor and<br />

materials necessary to cover the work involved in taking<br />

care <strong>of</strong> fire, safety and other work requested by the Massachusetts<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Public Safety, in all <strong>of</strong> the public<br />

school_t«u ildings.<br />

<strong>of</strong> (,281.16 from available funds in the Personal Service<br />

Account"for Inspection <strong>of</strong> Milk and Vinegar to Health<br />

Dejrt. ,_Personal Service Account_to meet differential <strong>of</strong><br />

the Executive Secretary George A. Bowles, as recommended<br />

by your Honorable Board January 26, and effective as <strong>of</strong><br />

July 26, 1948.<br />
