The Commonwealth of Massachusetts,
Department of Public "Safety is required to make an
inspection of school buildings within the Commonwealth,
with particular reference to safety features.^ This
authority is covered by Chapter 143 of the General Laws,
Sections 50 to 60 inclusive and the regulations which
apply thereto.
Before the Department of Public Safety can issue
a certificate to a municipality, as required by Section 52,
Chapter 143 of the General Laws, the municipality must
comply with the regulations and do whatever work is
necessary in order to make the schools safe for use,
The Massachusetts Department of Public Safety has
made a very thorough inspection of the various school
buildings in the City of Somerville over a period of many
months. As a result of these inspections Mr. Bernard B.
Whitney, State Building Inspector, connected with the Mass.
work must be done, without further delay. In order to
meet with the requirements provided by the regulations of
If such work is not done the Dept. of Public
Safety will have to take appropriate action to have these
conditions remedied, .such procedure being provided for -~
