iSCSI (Internet SCSI) CommandsUsing iSNS within an iSCSI storage environmentNote: iSNS (Internet Storage Naming Service) is supported only on Windowsplatforms that are part of an iSCSI network configuration. The iSNS service provides the same function for TCP/IP storagenetworks as the Simple Name Server (SNS) service in a Fibre Channelfabric — automated discovery, management and configuration ofiSCSI devices. It eliminates the need to manually configure eachindividual storage device with its own list of initiators and targets.Once configured, the iSNS server assumes responsibility for thediscovery and management of iSCSI devices. The iSNS service includes an iSNS server component and iSNS clientcomponents. The iSNS server must reside somewhere within the IPstorage network, for example, in the switch firmware, or on a host.An iSNS client resides on both the iSCSI storage system and anyiSCSI hosts connected to the storage system. When you start thestorage system, the iSNS client on the storage system gathers all thestorage system's iSCSI port information and stores it locally on thestorage system. When you add a server to the storage system’s iSNSconfiguration, Navisphere establishes a connection from the storagesystem to the iSNS server, and then registers all the storedinformation on the storage system with the iSNS server. To use the features of the iSNS service in an iSCSI storageenvironment:◆◆◆◆◆all the iSCSI requirements listed in the section, “About iSCSIstorage systems in IP networks” on page 365, must be met;an iSNS server must be running on a network to which thestorage system has access;the host initiators or HBAs must be able to use the iSNS service;the storage system must support the iSNS service;the iSNS server must be able to communicate with the storagesystem.368 EMC Navisphere Command Line Interface (CLI) Reference
