Making the Hay Mattress
Preparando il materasso in fieno
The best part of all that was dancing:
In August, at the summer cleaning
She threw away mattress and pillows
Stripping our bed to an idea on the empty floor,
Where, with hammer and nails she reinforced
Wobbly corners of the wooden frame.
Then in a new white case we stuffed fresh hay;
After she sealed it, she summoned us to dance
The hora on top to even out the surface
Soften flowers, herbs and grass.
Barefoot, we took lessons on the mattress
Stomped our feet, clapped our hands, laughed.
So it was, that till the day she died,
We danced in August and slept on flowers at night.
Il meglio di tutto questo era ballare:
in agosto, facendo le pulizie d’estate
lei gettava via materassi e cuscini
Stipavamo fieno fresco in una nuova federa bianca;
