I cannot know the little good i twill do me;
the bus will let us down in another country
with the wrong streets and strets that suddenly forget
their name at crossroads or in building-sites
and where no one will have heard of the sweets we ask for
and the man will shake the coins from out fists onto the
counter
and call his wife to come through, come through and see
this
and if we ever make it home again, the bus
will draw into the charred wreck of itself
and we will enter the land the point we left off
only our voices sound funny and all the houses are gone
and the rain tastes like kelly and black waves fold in
very slowly at the foot of Macalpine Road
and our sisters and mothers are fifty years dead.

Non posso sapere il poco bene che ne ricaverò;
l’autobus ci lascerà in un altro paese
con le strade sbagliate e strade subito dimentiche
dei loro nomi agli incroci o ai cantieri
e dove nessuno avrà mai sentito gli indirizzi richiesti
e l’uomo ci farà cadere le monete sul banco
e chiamerà la moglie, vieni, vieni a vedere ‘sta roba
e se mai torneremo a casa, l’autobus
si trascinerà carbonizzato rottame di se stesso
e ritoccheremo terra da dove siamo partiti
solo con voci strane ora e svanite le nostre case
e la pioggia sa di ghiacciolo e nere onde vanno ripiegandosi
molto lentamente ai piedi di Malcapine Road
e le nostre sorelle e madri morte ormai da cinquant’anni.
