Ai piedi della festa e del massacro,
sotto le tavole imbandite e le croci di dolore,
sempre guardando altrove, mesti, forse annusando
l’aria che passa tra i corpi e fugge leggera,
minuscoli cani osservano meditabondi
movimenti che nessuno vedrà mai,
fermi sopra gli affreschi sui muri calcinati
tra gambe nude di umani affaccendati.
At the feet of both feast and massacre,
beneath sumptuous tables and crosses of pain,
always looking somewhere else, dispirited, maybe
sniffing
at the air that moves among the bodies, lightly
taking flight, minute dogs watch pensively
movements no-one will ever see again,
motionless above the frescoes on calcinated walls
between the bare legs of bustling human beings.
