within the context of a collection that one can begin to describe the phenomenon<br />

as a set of normative practices <strong>and</strong> orientations revealed in the<br />

participants’ own conduct. In this section, I am going to focus on a collection<br />

of what I describe as ‘next turn repeats’. 4<br />

Question-intoned repeats<br />

When making a collection, it is best to initially cast the net as widely as<br />

possible <strong>and</strong> gather all instances that are potentially relevant (You can<br />

always throw them out later). For ‘next turn repeats’ this procedure will<br />

quickly result in a large <strong>and</strong> heterogeneous collection. For example it<br />

would include cases such as the following in which some part of the prior<br />

turn is repeated with ‘questioning’ intonation (see Jefferson, 1972; Schegloff<br />

et al., 1977; Sidnell, 2010a):<br />
