solution to confl ict. This new framing is tied, as Lakoff suggests, to new<br />

social policies <strong>and</strong> to a different way of doing Politics, with a capital P.<br />

In a globally connected world, frames travel. Adegoke’s (1999) research<br />

demonstrates how negative ways of talking about Africa in the world<br />

media become the norm. In so doing, they provide journalists with<br />

unconscious resources to draw on when they write about Africa, so that<br />

even the South Africa press reproduces these frames. This is the way in<br />

which discourses shape what <strong>and</strong> how we think. We pick them up unconsciously<br />

<strong>and</strong> they speak through us. Bigelow <strong>and</strong> Peterson (2002) raise<br />

many of the issues for teaching justice in an unjust (globalised) world as<br />

does Klein (1999, 2007).<br />

Underlying all of this work is the need to produce fully literate human<br />

subjects who can manipulate symbols, read critically <strong>and</strong> think for themselves.<br />

The new brain research makes it clear that reading is not innate.<br />

Reading can only be learned because of the brain’s plastic design, <strong>and</strong><br />

when reading takes place, that individual brain is changed forever,<br />

both physiologically <strong>and</strong> intellectually. (Wolf, 2007: 5)<br />

In learning to read, the brain’s plasticity enables new neural pathways<br />

to establish themselves. These pathways have to be developed to the point<br />

where processing text is so fast that readers have enough time to refl ect on<br />

what they are reading while they are reading. The sustained reading of a<br />

book is different from the ways in which readers scroll through <strong>and</strong> read<br />

digital texts. Because, as yet, we do not know what new pathways for<br />

reading these new practices will develop, Wolf (2007) argues that we<br />

should not allow the new reading pathways to replace the existing pathways<br />

for reading; rather they need to be established in addition to the old<br />

pathways. Her book, subtitled The Story <strong>and</strong> Science of the Reading Brain,<br />

helps us to underst<strong>and</strong> that in teaching our brains to read we changed the<br />

intellectual evolution of our species. New developments in cognitive neuro-science<br />

should not be ignored by social practice theories of literacy.<br />

Similarly, reading occurs in social contexts <strong>and</strong> has social effects. Science<br />

alone is not enough.<br />
