In 2009, 4958 cases of sexual abuse were reported to K<strong>in</strong>dertelefo<strong>on</strong>, which equates to 19% of all reports<br />
relat<strong>in</strong>g to abuse and violence that are sent to the organisati<strong>on</strong>. Unfortunately there is no <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />
available with regard to child abuse material <strong>in</strong> the reports of sexual abuse. The 298 reports of <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
abuse sent to K<strong>in</strong>dertelefo<strong>on</strong> all relate to <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e harassment.<br />
Table 3.4 shows the gender and age distributi<strong>on</strong> of the children who reported <strong>in</strong>cidences of sexual abuse<br />
to K<strong>in</strong>dertelefo<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2009.<br />
187 This can be divided <strong>in</strong>to <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e harassment, harmful sexual c<strong>on</strong>tent, harmful violent c<strong>on</strong>tent, other<br />
harmful c<strong>on</strong>tent, c<strong>on</strong>tact with sexual ‘predators’, <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e coerci<strong>on</strong> to do someth<strong>in</strong>g, requests for <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />
relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e abuse and other issues related to <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e abuse.<br />
188 When this figure is compared with the Annual Report 2009 of K<strong>in</strong>dertelefo<strong>on</strong> (<str<strong>on</strong>g>Nati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Office of<br />
K<strong>in</strong>dertelefo<strong>on</strong>, 2010), the follow<strong>in</strong>g strik<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g emerges. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the annual report, 141,112<br />
serious reports were made, of which 8.1% related to sexual abuse and 12.2% related to harassment.<br />
This would equate to approximately 28,646 reports, which is likely to <strong>in</strong>clude the 298 cases of <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
harassment. If we take these away, we end up with 28,348 reports of abuse and violence <strong>in</strong> accordance<br />
with the def<strong>in</strong>iti<strong>on</strong> from the Violence aga<strong>in</strong>st children report (<str<strong>on</strong>g>Child</str<strong>on</strong>g> Helpl<strong>in</strong>e Internati<strong>on</strong>al, 2010),<br />
whilst accord<strong>in</strong>g to this research 26,850 children have reported these <strong>in</strong>cidents to K<strong>in</strong>dertelefo<strong>on</strong>. This<br />
difference can probably be expla<strong>in</strong>ed by the fact that some children report both sexual abuse and harassment.<br />
These children are counted <strong>in</strong> both the ‘violence’ and ‘harassment’ categories <strong>in</strong> the annual<br />
report of K<strong>in</strong>dertelefo<strong>on</strong> (<str<strong>on</strong>g>Nati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Office of K<strong>in</strong>dertelefo<strong>on</strong>, 2010), whilst they are <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>on</strong>ce <strong>in</strong><br />
the ‘abuse and violence’ category <strong>in</strong> the Violence aga<strong>in</strong>st children report (<str<strong>on</strong>g>Child</str<strong>on</strong>g> Helpl<strong>in</strong>e Internati<strong>on</strong>al,<br />
2010).
