The follow<strong>in</strong>g emerged from the YISS surveys:<br />
YISS-1 (2000) 402 : <strong>in</strong> the year prior to the <strong>in</strong>terviews, <strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong> five (19%) of the m<strong>in</strong>or resp<strong>on</strong>dents<br />
was c<strong>on</strong>tacted <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e for sexual purposes, 403 3% of whom were c<strong>on</strong>tacted <strong>in</strong> an<br />
aggressive manner. 404<br />
YISS-2 (2006) 405 : a follow-up survey five years later showed that these figures had changed to <strong>on</strong>e<br />
<strong>in</strong> seven (13%), 4% respectively.<br />
Table 1.4 shows a selecti<strong>on</strong> of relevant results from the study of desired and undesired sexual experiences<br />
of Dutch youngsters <strong>on</strong> the Internet from 2006. 406<br />

Am<strong>on</strong>gst other f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, it emerged from the research that most youngsters <strong>in</strong> the random sample had<br />
experienced hav<strong>in</strong>g been asked questi<strong>on</strong>s of a sexual nature <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e. It was also frequently the case that<br />

with 1,501 youngsters between ten and seventeen years of age (representative nati<strong>on</strong>al random sample <strong>in</strong><br />
USA) who regularly use the Internet (at least <strong>on</strong>ce per m<strong>on</strong>th <strong>in</strong> the six m<strong>on</strong>ths preced<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>terview).<br />

provide pers<strong>on</strong>al sexual details although this is undesired, or if requested to do so by an adult, whether<br />
or not desired.<br />
404 Def<strong>in</strong>iti<strong>on</strong> of ‘aggressive sexual c<strong>on</strong>tact’: c<strong>on</strong>tact for sexual purposes with the aim of mak<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>tact<br />
offl<strong>in</strong>e such as arrang<strong>in</strong>g to meet <strong>on</strong>e another/c<strong>on</strong>tact by teleph<strong>on</strong>e/c<strong>on</strong>tact by post (send<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>on</strong>ey<br />
or gifts).<br />
405 Wolak et al., 2006. The teleph<strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong>terviews were c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> the period March – June 2005 with 1500<br />
youngsters between ten and seventeen years of age who regularly use the Internet.<br />
406 Methodological details of the study: the random sample c<strong>on</strong>sisted of 10,905 resp<strong>on</strong>dents from twelve<br />
years of age and older, who were recruited <strong>on</strong> popular websites aimed at young people and who had<br />
completed an electr<strong>on</strong>ic questi<strong>on</strong>naire. Girls accounted for 79% of resp<strong>on</strong>dents, whilst boys accounted<br />
for 21%. Not all resp<strong>on</strong>dents were m<strong>in</strong>ors, approximately <strong>on</strong>e quarter was 18 years of age or older.<br />
407 Three percent stated this was possible, but they did not know for sure. This was also the case for the<br />
+2% figure for girls.
