lowed by a variety of similar <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong> other countries. In 1999, INHOPE – the <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al umbrella<br />

network of Internet hotl<strong>in</strong>es – was created, of which 39 hotl<strong>in</strong>es spread across more than 34 countries<br />

were members <strong>in</strong> 2010. 416 INHOPE hotl<strong>in</strong>es work <strong>in</strong> collaborati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> order to tackle child abuse material<br />

<strong>on</strong> the Internet. 417 Statistical data from INHOPE and a number of <strong>in</strong>dividual members of INHOPE are<br />

shown <strong>in</strong> the boxed text as an illustrati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

INHOPE 418<br />

- In the period September 2004 (18 hotl<strong>in</strong>es) to December 2006 <strong>in</strong>clusive (27 hotl<strong>in</strong>es), 900,000<br />

reports were received from the public and a total of 1,900,000 reports were made (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

reports generated by the hotl<strong>in</strong>es themselves. 419<br />

- In the period September 2005 to June 2010 <strong>in</strong>clusive (37 hotl<strong>in</strong>es), an average of 60,200 reports<br />

were sent <strong>in</strong> total per m<strong>on</strong>th to INHOPE hotl<strong>in</strong>es from members of the public. 420 Dur<strong>in</strong>g the last<br />

quarter of 2006 a further 35,000 reports were sent (and 91,000 <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g reports generated by<br />

the hotl<strong>in</strong>es themselves). 421<br />

The CyberTipl<strong>in</strong>e of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Nati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Center for Miss<strong>in</strong>g & Exploited <str<strong>on</strong>g>Child</str<strong>on</strong>g>ren (NCMEC) (Internet hotl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the<br />

United States of America)<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the week of 31 January 2011, the CyberTipl<strong>in</strong>e received 3,456 reports, which brought the total<br />

number of reports received s<strong>in</strong>ce its establishment <strong>in</strong> March 1998 to 906,449. 422<br />

The Internet Watch Foundati<strong>on</strong> (IWF) (Internet hotl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the United K<strong>in</strong>gdom)<br />

In 2010 the IWF received 43,190 reports of suspected child abuse material, of which 39% (16,739)<br />

was also deemed to be c<strong>on</strong>sidered as such by the IWF. 423<br />

Meldpunt K<strong>in</strong>derporno op Internet received 9164 reports <strong>in</strong> 2010, of which 2,602 reports were ultimately<br />

deemed to actually <strong>in</strong>volve child abuse material accord<strong>in</strong>g to Meldpunt K<strong>in</strong>derporno op Internet (this<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cerned 32% of the total number of reports after adjustment for the quantity of c<strong>on</strong>tent that<br />

was reported twice). Please refer to §3.3.1.1 for further statistics relat<strong>in</strong>g to Meldpunt K<strong>in</strong>derporno op<br />
