The Castagno family story began a
century ago and the Via Lagrange
chapter dates from the 1960s. The store
window displays are always an attraction
for passers-by, who struggle to resist
popping in to buy the goodies on show.
Despite the name, literally “The Cheese
Cabin”, the owners are keen to stress that
“We don’t sell cheese only”. The store in
fact also stocks the best in Piedmontese,
Italian and foreign pork butchery — cured
pork that isn’t lost in translation! Here
you’re spoilt for choice, but the vast range
of balsamic and flavored vinegars on sale
really does deserve special mention. As
does the fish, preserved in oil, smoked
and dried, the sauces, the preserved
vegetables, the foie gras and patés, jams,
biscuits and creams. Not forgetting the
cheese, of course, which is available here
in every shape and form, from the freshest
to the most mature.
