PASTRY SHOPS Pino Buttiglieri is the current owner of this cake shop in the center of Chieri. He likes to tell the story of the Umbertino, still on sale today, a soft amaretto scented with Sicilian oranges which, it is said, was invented by the owner at the time for a reception in honor of Prince Umberto of Savoy on a visit to the city. A recent invention, created to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco, is a chocolate named after him made with plain chocolate and a soft center of absinthe cream. The chocolates, wrapped in artemisia-colored paper, can be bought in a gift box with period views of the city. Classic specialties are focaccia chierese, excellent brut e bun, gentianella with almonds and baci di Chieri (with hazelnut cream or rum). Last but not least, there’s Perché, a large chocolate filled with hazelnut paste and amaretto. Closed Monday. 253

Caratteristiche le giuraje, confetti “nu- ziali” di nocciole glassate, presentati in una confezione che ne ricorda la destinazione originale. Alessandra è sempre disponibile a illustrare le caratteristiche delle delizie esposte nonché la sua ostinata attenzione nella scelta degli ingredienti, tutti di pro- duzione locale, e nella lavorazione condotta con criteri tradizionali. Ogni cosa è fatta nel modo più naturale possibile, salvaguardando la quarantennale tradi- zione familiare di inecce- pibile livello qualitativo. Chiuso lunedì pomeriggio, martedì e mercoledì.
