As a researcher at Olivetti, Remo Falconieri
left his mark with a series of im-
portant developments and inventions. With the
same spirit of ingenuity, since 1985, the year
he launched Cieck, he has become a leading
light in the Canavese winegrowing renais-
sance. Now 80, but still on splendid form, he
tells us that his company will soon be moving
to new premises in San Giorgio Canavese. His
production is dominated by erbaluce, the stan-
dout grape of the area. Vigorous with low basal
fertility, it tends to be arbour-trained, whereas
reds — including neretto, of which Remo is
one of the few custodians left these days —
are trellis-trained. Remo’s great-grandfather
used to make a sort of ancestral spumante, and
now Remo has perfected his techniques to pro-
duce Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante Brut M.Cl.
San Giorgio. We also recommend Erbaluce di
Caluso 2011, Erbaluce di Caluso Misobolo, of
which “T” is a limited-edition late version, Er-
baluce di Caluso Passito Alladium and, last but
by no means least, Canavese Neretto, simple
but good.
