FISHMONGERS
The Piazza Madama Cristina market, with its vegetable, cured meat and cheese stalls,
plus a farmers’ wing on Via Galliari, is a food institution in the San Salvario neigh-
borhood. All around it more food shops still allow you to buy virtually anything you want.
That includes fish, of course, which is more and more popular on Turinese tables. The fin-
est is to be found at the corner stall, recently modernized and run as ever by the Fischetti
brothers. Here on show on ice you’ll find all the colors of the Mediterranean, from the
bright red of the rockfish to the striped silver of the mackerel and pink of the mullet and
San Remo shrimps. Liguria and Sicily continue to be the main source of fresh fish of which
there are always plenty to choose from. Here they pay a lot of attention to seasonality and
provenance and are always ready to give customers advice on how to get the best out of
the fish. If you’re in a hurry, ready-to-cook products, such as mixed fish for pasta sauce, are
available, and on request they’ll avoid you the nuisance of cleaning fish by doing the job
for you. Open in the morning from Tuesday to Friday, all day Saturday.
