WINE GROWERS
C
arla Comotto (Carlotta) and Franco Celso are big believers in this terroir.
History speaks clearly: in 1990 they were the first people to start bottling
so-called “simple” mountain wine in the Susa Valley. And that’s when its rise to
national fame and fortune began. Walking through the small Costa Oro vineyard
behind the cellar is like jumping back in time. The vines are still supported by
wooden poles, hand-carved 60 years ago, and the neretto and ciliegiolo vineyards
are also almost 60-years-old. The other vineyard, in Chiomonte, is situated at a
high altitude from 700 to 1,000 meters on chalky soil. This year production is lim-
ited to two labels, two sound wines that aren’t aged on wood. Valsusa Costa Oro
has nice spicy notes on the nose and a creamy, juicy palate. Roceja is a perfect
marriage of the red fruit and acidity of the barbera grape and the fine, elegant
tannin of the nebbiolo. An eminently quaffable wine.
