Among the founders of Unionbirrai, the Italian brewer’s association, brothers Enrico
and Alessandro Borio are still very much involved in beer. The plant is still the same
as it was in the year the business was launched, 1996, and the brewery, with a small
and popular adjoining brewpub, is situated in a former carpenter’s shop a short distance
from the River Chisone. The brothers are very environment-conscious and have launched
as number of eco-schemes, one of the most successful of which has been a returnable
bottle system. In 2011 alone this led to the recovery of 10,000 bottles. On the production
front, Beba follows the German school, with invariably low-fermentation beers made using
only malted barley grains, hops and yeasts. Our four aces are Motor Oil (dark with hints
of coffee and cocoa), N. 1 (a wonderful lager, the range’s bestseller), Fifteen Years (pale
with heady, delicate notes) and Molto Malto (amber with a long, elegant finish) We also
recommend Due Gnomi, Gilda, Santa Maria and Toro.
Open Friday and Saturday from 7.30pm to 1pm and Sunday from 6pm to 12 midnight.
