WINE GROWERS
E
rbaluce is an old grape, mentioned for the first time way back in 1605 by
G.B. Croce. Many scholars have described it since then, arguing and diverg-
ing over its zone of origin. In all likelihood the grape came into being in the area
where it is now widely grown, in the foothills of the Alps in the province of Turin.
What’s certain is that its capital is the town of Caluso, where the Bianco family
work with great bravura. Their farm dates from the mid-18 th century when it was
a smallholding outside the town walls. At the helm of this small family business is
Daniele Bianco, a qualified enologist, flanked by his father Renato. Their product
range comprises the local classics: an excellent floral Erbaluce, a fresh, dry, by no
means banal Erbaluce Metodo Classico Pas Dosé and, for lovers of the genre, an
unmissable Caluso Passito.
