WINE GROWERS This small family winery, situated in the hills near Turin on a late-19th- century farm, recently celebrated its seventieth birthday. Francesco Bal- biano and his son Luca, who manage the business, still use their four-hectare family vineyards and buy in grapes from trusted growers. Besides Freisa di Chieri, produced fizzy and still, we recommend the Riserva Barbarossa, a Fre- isa aged on wood. The Balbianos never shirk a challenge and have now re- vived the historic Villa della Regina vineyard after 50 years of abandonment. In 2009 they bottled their first Vigna della Regina, thereby becoming the first Italian winery to produce a label from an urban vineyard. A museum adjoining the winery houses a display of agricultural and viticultural tools and utensils. 321

La sto- ria parla chiaro: i primi a imbottigliare il cosiddetto vino “semplice” di montagna in Valsusa nel 1990 sono stati loro ed è iniziata così la parabola di suc- cesso e notorietà nazionale del vino. Si fa un tuffo nel passato quando si percorre la piccola vigna Co- sta Oro, dietro l’azienda. A tenere su i ceppi ci sono ancora i paletti di legno tagliati a mano di 100 anni fa e le vigne di neretto e ciliegiolo hanno quasi 60 anni. L’altra vigna, a Chiomonte, è situata a un’altitudine elevata che va dai 700 ai 1000 metri su terreni di ma- trice calcarea. Quest’anno la produzione è limitata a due etichette, due vini integri e non passati in legno: ha belle note di spezie al naso e un palato cremoso ricco di succo il Valsusa Costa Oro, mentre il Roceja lega in maniera perfetta il frutto rosso e l’acidità della barbera al tannino fi ne ed elegante del nebbiolo. Un vino di grandissima beva.
