distribution in an undulating terrain. The RBMC <strong>of</strong> Kallada covers a wide ayacut
area. The RBMC <strong>of</strong> Peechi commands 23 villages as against only 89 villages in
the case <strong>of</strong> LBMC.
3.1.4 Selection <strong>of</strong> sample villages and farm households
After selecting the right bank main canals from the two sample projects, the
entire canal system is divided into three zones, viz., the head reach, middle reach
and the tail-end. This is based on the distance from the head regulator <strong>of</strong> the
main canal to the tail-end <strong>of</strong> the canal l . The list <strong>of</strong> villages coming under each <strong>of</strong>
the reaches has been prepared based on the information available from the
respective project reports. There are 22 villages coming under RBMC <strong>of</strong> Kallada
command area and 17 villages under RBMC <strong>of</strong> Peechi command. The selection
<strong>of</strong> the sample farm households for the study from villages was has bcen on
stratified random sampling. The strata being small and marginal medium and big
farmers. The different processes involved in the sample selection are explained in
Chart 3.1.
From the Kallada irrigation project, 200 farmers have been selected- 78
from the head, 65 from the middle reach and 57 farmers from the tail end. From
the Peechi irrigation project, a total <strong>of</strong> lIS farmers have been selected- 50 from
the head, 45 from the middle and 20 from the tail reach. The sample farm
holdings have been drawn from a wider coverage <strong>of</strong> the entire canal systems.
'For instance, if the total length <strong>of</strong> the main canal is 12 kms from the reservoir to the tail
ehd, the first 4 kms stretch <strong>of</strong> the canal is called as head reach, from 5 th to 8 th kms as
middle reach and from 9 th to 12th kms as tail-end.
