proportion <strong>of</strong> area under canal irrigation marked sharp decline from 46 per cent in 1952 to below 30 per cent in 1997. the area irrigated by wells has increased by 108 per cent during 19R0-1 997. This essentially brings out the mismatch between capital in\'estment in canal construction and the corresponding area expansion. A further disaggregate level analysis <strong>of</strong> this data is in order here to enable a much man: realistic view <strong>of</strong> the trends in cropped area and source-wise irrigated area in the state. This is to take can: <strong>of</strong> the infirmity in data caused by downward re\ision in net irrigated area after 1974-75 as discussed in Dhawan (1988, 1991). Accordingly. growth rates are worked out for the entire period <strong>of</strong> 1952 to 1997. The analysis is di\'ided into t\\O phases. ie .. 1951-74 and 1975-97 to reconcile the do\\nward revision in the net irrigated area (Table 5.5). in gross irrigated area. While canal irrigated area grew by two per cent during the first phase. the second phase experienced considerable decline <strong>of</strong> almost 3 per cent. \\·e:II-irrigate:d area. which declined by 3.37 during the first phase. increased by more than 13 per cent during the second phase. The trends in cropping intensity and irrigation ratio show diametrically opposite trends. which suggest that the increase in cropping intensity was not the effect <strong>of</strong> irrigation. This is also e\·ident from the low correlation coefficient between the net irrigated area and cropping intensity (0.04) and negative correlation between the gross irrigated area and the croppmg intensity (-0.01) and cropping intensity and irrigation ratio (-0.37). Thus. the pe:rformance <strong>of</strong> the irrigation sector in terms <strong>of</strong> gro\\i1h in net and gross irrigate:d area and canal irrieated area in the state is not been commensurate - - ' \\ Ith the k\eI <strong>of</strong> investment.
