was executed on 24.05.1986 and that <strong>of</strong> LB main canal on 30.06.1992. The works <strong>of</strong> dam. saddle dam. weir at Ottackal and LB & RB main canals are fully completed. The RBMC is 68 km long with 4 branches and distributary system to irrigate an area <strong>of</strong> 39500 ha. the Left Bank main canal sYstem . in 56 km/lone - with three branches and distriturary system and irrigates 22.600 ha, Both the canals are designed with the capacity to irrigate the originally planned command area <strong>of</strong> 61.600 ha in the Taluks <strong>of</strong> Pathanapuram. Kunnathoor and Kozhenchery in the Pathanapuram district and parts <strong>of</strong> Mavelikkara and Karthikappally taluks <strong>of</strong> Alappuzha district. 4.2.2 Cropping pattern As per the re\ised project report. a total CCA <strong>of</strong> 61630 ha. comprises <strong>of</strong> 20430 ha. <strong>of</strong> wet land (33.15 %) mainly under paddy and the balance being garden lands <strong>of</strong> 41200 ha. (66.85 %). The most important among the garden crops is coconut. w'hich covers an area <strong>of</strong> 6000 ha. (14.56 % <strong>of</strong> the garden lands). Besides. an area <strong>of</strong> 13100 ha. are interplanted with coconut and other crops. Other crops grown in the project area are cashewnut (2200 ha.), rubber (500 ha.) and arecanut ( 11 00 ha.). Tapioca (6200 ha.) and sugarcane (600 ha.) are the other important crops grown in the irri~ation command (GOK. 1996). The World Rank financing <strong>of</strong> the project which commenced from 1981-82 and ended with September 1989. was continued to a command area <strong>of</strong> 37,600 ha in phase I as detailed in table 4.1. 115
