The irrigation sector in the state compnses 29 irrigation projects and about 5000 minor irrigation works. including groundwater and lift irrigation schemes. Of the 29 major/ medium irrigation schemes, 14 are completed and IS schemes are under various stages <strong>of</strong> completion. The details regarding the year <strong>of</strong> commencement and completion <strong>of</strong> the ayacut area and districts benefited are provided in tables 5.2A and 5.2B. Almost all the irrigation projects in Kerala are technically designed for irrigating exclusively paddy with the ultimate objective <strong>of</strong> stabilising paddy production during the first and second cropping seasons (Virippll! Autumn and A/I/ndakan! Winter) and if possible to raise a third crop (PI/nella! Summer).
