variables from the model. The variables used in the model are specific to the characteristics <strong>of</strong> the irrigation commands and farm holdings covered under the study. The important variables selected for analysis include holding size. age <strong>of</strong> the farmer, occupational status, status <strong>of</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> family labour and the potential area that could be brought under irrigation with certain level <strong>of</strong> investment on OFD. The models used for analysis with respect to each project differ in terms <strong>of</strong> explanatory variables, keeping expenditure on OFD as the dependent variable in each case. All <strong>of</strong> the five explanatory variables considered in the analvsis are - expected to have positive association with respect to expenditure on OFD. For instance, higher the extent <strong>of</strong> groundwater replenishment as caused by seepage in the Peechi canal, higher will be the farm level investment on OFD. Similarly, higher the extent <strong>of</strong> groundwater recharge, higher will be the capacity <strong>of</strong> the pumpset and greater will be the OFD expenditure. Having elaborated on the important variables explaining the adoption <strong>of</strong> OFD in the Peechi irrigation project, let us examine the influence <strong>of</strong> these variables on the farmers' attitude towards adoption <strong>of</strong> OFD in the fields prior to release <strong>of</strong> water. The results <strong>of</strong> the multiple regression analysis with respect to farm level adoption <strong>of</strong>OFD have been explained as shown in table 7.9. T a bl e 79 .. From the analysis, it is evident that OFD expenditure III the Peechi projects has been well explained by all the variables selected, except F AMLAB, which has a negative coefficient. Thus" the farm level expenditure on OFD in the Peechi project is determined by the extent <strong>of</strong> groundwater replenishment caused by the seepage in canals, capacity <strong>of</strong> the pumpset available for irrigating the plot and the proportion <strong>of</strong> dry area that could be brought under irrigation. The occupational status <strong>of</strong> the farmers has also been found to be important, which ill'plies that if farming is the main source <strong>of</strong> income <strong>of</strong> the respondent (farmer), 286
